Automatic Classification of Ceramic Sherds
نویسندگان
چکیده
The ARCADIA project focuses on methods to facilitate the interpretation and the evaluation of an archaeological ceramic heritage. It consists in developing a digitalization chain of the ceramic sherds to automatically extract and classify the patterns imprinted by potters using a carved wood wheel. In this paper, we present a pattern extraction and classification method that aims to solve these issues. Encrusted patterns are extracted from 3D scans using various techniques and are then classified using a Support Vector Machine (SVM) model. Results are first evaluated in terms of patterns extraction and then the classification step is compared to the ground truth obtained manually (inking patterns performed by the archaeologist). Keywords— Archaeological ceramic heritage, Carved wood wheel decoration, Classification, Pattern recognition.

Chav́ın de Huántar is an archaeological site of critical interest for intepreting the Andean archaeological record. In this paper, we present our work on developing an object recognition system to classify Chav́ın pot sherds by decorative impressions. We trained and evaluated MSER and SURF based classification systems on a small labeled set of replica sherds and achieved classification accuracy o...

As part of the Cultural Resource Management (CRM) evaluation process, fifty (50) Woodland ceramic sherds were selected by the Ft. Bragg (North Carolina) archaeological staff. The sherds were chosen so that they might give a sense of the range of variation that may exist within a single drainage and the differences that may exist between the river drainages (Table 1). The three river drainages i...

A sequential degradation scheme, involving solvent extraction, alkaline saponification and catalytic hydropyrolysis (open-system pyrolysis assisted by high hydrogen gas pressure), was used for recovering both free and covalently-bound lipid organic compounds from two archaeological ceramic sherds sampled from the interior of cooking vessels and from a ceramic control sample used for cooking mod...
متن کاملFeature Extraction on Axially Symmetric Pottery for Hierarchical Classification
Due to the mass of sherds and vessels that have been dug out by archaeologists over many years, the request for an automatic classification system has become obvious. This paper presents algorithmic key ingredients of such a system: segmentation, feature extraction and clustering. Therefore, the extensive analysis of a representative profile line is of high importance, because it helps not only...
